How to Find Glass Insulators

Insulators have been around since the 1850s, and these heavy pieces of molded glass often have the patent date and the maker included in the mold. Collectors look for insulators by CD number, by color and sometimes by maker, as most insulators were American-made by known glass companies. Knowing where to find the good stuff makes the difference between an expensive average collection and an inexpensive outstanding collection.

Find insulators near you. Insulators are heavy to ship and there are several advantages to locating them near your home. You are able to examine the pieces for damage and color and perhaps even bargain on the price. Call local antiques and collectibles shops and ask them to call you if they get insulators in their shop. If you find insulators near your home, give your name and telephone number to the person. Ask to be called if more insulators are located. Networking helps.

Look for insulators at collectibles shows in your area. Visiting a traveling show allows you to see insulators up close, check for damage, and save on shipping costs by purchasing them in person. They are also a good place to network with sellers. Let sellers know what you are looking for; they may bring the ones you want to the next show.

Watch for insulators along the highway and take the old highways when you travel. Many of the electric and telephone lines ran along the highway and some still exist. If you see insulators on old poles, locate the landowner and ask about the insulators. He may have a bucketful in the garage.

Look online. The National Insulator Association is active and helps collectors network and learn. Join a webring for insulator collectors like the one available on the cjow.com website.

Attend the National Insulator Association annual show and network with other collectors and dealers. The NIA website gives the location of the show for the current year and the next. Also look for local insulator clubs in your area. There may be one close enough that you can attend some meetings and make connections with sellers.
