How to Store Antique Paper Money

Your antique paper money could potentially be worth thousands of dollars, if it is cared for properly. Like all paper materials, constant exposure to heat, light or moisture can ruin the paper, removing ink, causing tears or fading pictures. According to the Library of Congress, "a good environment and safe handling and storage will preserve paper." Knowing where and how to protect your antique money will help maintain its value as an antique.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a suitable environment within your home. Constant changes in temperature damage the money's ink, so avoid basements, attics and bathrooms. The ideal environment for preserving paper, according to the Library of Congress, is 72 degrees Fahrenheit. Areas such as closets, drawers or wall safes provide the best environment to store money.

    • 2

Place your antique money away from light, pollution or dust. Fluorescent bulbs and sunlight emit ultraviolet rays that can damage your item, while fumes and dust from photocopy machines, car exhausts and heating systems can damage paper.

    • 3

Place your antique money inside a stock sheet folder once you have found a suitable environment away from fumes or light. These protective folders are acid-free, so they prevent any acidity from damaging the paper. In addition, stock-sheet folders provide the stiffness necessary for protecting your money from tears or creases.
