How to Synchronize Pendulum Clocks

A pendulum clock uses a system of swinging weights to measure the passing of time. This type of clock has been around for centuries. Actually, up until the 1930s, it was the most precise timekeeping element in the world. Besides still being a fairly accurate type of clock, pendulum clocks are used as a decorative element. These clocks are often made from quality materials and have significant value as antiques.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the minute hand of your pendulum clock to the number 6. Then stop to hear the pendulum clock strike. If you do not hear anything, turn the clock hand to number 12. Again, stop to hear the pendulum clock strike.

    • 2

Count the exact number of strikes and then move the minute hand to that number. Set the pendulum clock to that exact time. To reach the exact time needed, move the minute hand only, turning it counterclockwise. Some pendulum clocks are covered with glass with the minute hand accessible only when the glass is opened like a window, while some do not have a glass covering at all. There are also pendulum clock models that can access the minute hand only from the back side, through a turning knob.

    • 3

Move the pendulum system by gently pushing the weights with your hand. Note that moving the pendulum about 1/2 inch to the right is enough to get it swinging back and forth. If you can't hear the ticking sound, move the pendulum for about 1 inch. Remember that a pendulum must not be pushed too much, because such violent movements might damage the delicate clock mechanism.

    • 4

Put a key into the rating nut on the back of the clock. Turn the key to adjust the height of the pendulum. Note that one of the most important factors is the height of the pendulum, so make sure to adjust it to a proper position. Remember that a long pendulum swings faster than a short one.

    • 5

Check your pendulum clock after a few days. If you set the pendulum height properly, the time will still be accurate. If the time is not accurate, repeat Step 3 to regulate the clock.
