How to Know Real Fostoria Glassware

Fostoria was considered a luxury brand of glassware for over 80 years, until production ceased in 1972. The company was founded in 1887, and its original manufacturing location was Fostoria, Ohio. Fostoria remained popular through World War II, producing glassware plates, serving platters, bowls, goblets and vases. If you're in the market for this brand of vintage glassware, make sure you know how to discern genuine Fostoria pieces.

Instructions

    • 1

Look for glass pieces with a fleur-de-lis and a heart, with an etched fern in the heart. If there's a fan etched below the heart, you're likely looking at the "Trojan" pattern. This pattern was made in yellow and pink, with pink the more rare of the two.

    • 2

Examine the piece for an etched bow, which should be enveloped in intricate etched flowers. This particular pattern is known as "June." It was made in yellow, pink, blue and clear.

    • 3

Look for an etched pattern with two large swirling vines and a shell in the middle. The vines should curl out on each side of the shell shape. This pattern is known as "Versailles." Fostoria produced Versailles in pink, blue, yellow and green.

    • 4

Examine the piece for etchings in a lacy pattern. If you see a lace pattern with petaled flowers and scrolls, it is likely Fostoria's "Meadow Rose." This pattern was made only in blue and clear crystal.

    • 5

Look for small leaves and tiny roses covering the entire piece. There should also be sections with larger leaves. This pattern is known as "Chintz," and was made only in clear, transparent crystal.
