How to Take Apart a Royal Quiet Deluxe Typewriter

The Royal Quiet Deluxe manual typewriter was first introduced just before World War II, and was considered portable in its custom case. Portability made the Royal Quiet the choice of many famous authors including Ernest Hemingway, and Ian Fleming, who owned a rare gold-plated one. Removing the cover and other parts aids in cleaning and refurbishing the typewriter. Taking apart the roller and other moving parts allows access for oil and other lubricants.

Instructions

    • 1

Spread the soft cloth on the work surface. Lay the typewriter upside down on the cloth.

    • 2

Remove the screw in the center of the Speed knob on the right hand side of the typewriter. Pull the knob free. Write the words ̶0;speed knob̶1; on a bag and place the screw and knob in the bag.

    • 3

Remove the screws holding the cover tabs to the body of the typewriter with the screwdriver. Place the screws in a labeled baggie.

    • 4

Turn the typewriter right side up. Pull the cover straight up and off the typewriter. Clean the inside of the cover with the rag and set aside.

    • 5

Remove the screws on the back hinge of the typewriter top, and store in a labeled bag. Lift the lid from the typewriter and clean the underside. Set the lid aside.

    • 6

Pull the typewriter ribbon spools from their pins, and slide the ribbon from the holders and guides on the ribbon carrier. Remove the ribbon but keep the spools -- they are reusable with fresh ribbon.

    • 7

Loosen the screws on the side of the roller. Remove the screws and store in a labeled baggie. Remove the side knob of the roller and place in the baggie with the screw. Slide the roller free of the typewriter.
