How to Check the Original Paint on a Farmall Super M

Though over 57,000 were produced in the early 1950s, the Farmall Super M tractor is hard to come by today. During the Super M's production period, improvements like live hydraulics and torque amplifier transmission were added. Yet regardless of technological improvements, International Harvester (IH) was careful to continue the classic bright red color of the Farmall brand. While this choice was originally for safety when on or near roadways, it became an identifying feature of the manufacturer known as "Big Red". Matching this distinctive shade is difficult, but it is made simpler if the original composition can be obtained.

Instructions

    • 1

Gauge the thickness of the coating with a magnetic thickness gauge. Place the magnet flush against the surface of the area you are testing. Touch the gauge to the magnet and pull away. Ease of separation demonstrates a thick layer or layers. The tractor may have been re-painted multiple times, making a perfect match difficult without stripping the paint entirely.

    • 2

Consult the nearest CaseIH dealer for advice regarding your Farmall Super M. Bring as much relevant information as possible, e.g. serial number, year of production and factory (Super Ms were assembled in 3 different locations).

    • 3

Visit online forums for farmers and tractor collectors. Provide as much specific information on the tractor as you can. Many participants have been where you are and have met with varying degrees of success. Seek advice on purchasing and mixing paints.

    • 4

Collect color photographs online and from hard copy sources. Show them to paint professionals at Home Depot and to professional tractor restorers. Trained eyes of this sort can identify, for a fee, the right hue or combination for your purposes.
