How to Select a Brass Lens

While the precision of modern camera lenses may win out over their antique predecessors, when it comes to sheer beauty, there's no contest. Handcrafted from brass, these 19th century lenses are not only valuable but create striking, singular photographs as well. If you find one, you may wish to restore it to working order and modify it for use on your contemporary camera. Here's what to look for to ensure you select the right brass lens for you.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the brass lens with a magnifying glass. Make sure all parts are complete, including the glass optic and mounting flange. There should be no major damage or flaws. Normal wear in antique lenses is expected.

    • 2

Scrutinize the glass. While irregularities are common in antique brass lenses and can even contribute to a photograph's beauty, the glass should be free of scratches, chips, cracks, fungus and clouding.

    • 3

Confirm the threads of the barrel have not been stripped. These are difficult to repair.

    • 4

Make sure the aperture diaphragm opens and closes smoothly. The iris should produce perfect circular apertures.

    • 5

Don't let dirt or tarnish alarm you. Brass lenses are easily cleaned using brass polish and a microfiber cloth. Tough stains may require ammonia.
