Places to Collect Beach Glass in Washington

Also known as sea glass or mermaid tears, beach glass has become a popular collectible for antique enthusiasts and those who like to acquire unique pieces of art. Nothing more than glass smoothed by the sea, each piece has its own special shape and hue. Washington&'s Puget Sound area is filled with beaches covered with these glass pieces, ripe for collectors to comb through and pick what catches their eye.
  1. Glass Beach, Port Townsend

    • As its name suggests, one of the most popular spots for beach glass collecting is an unmarked spot formerly located next to the town dump. A few discarded auto parts protrude from the sand, giving an edgy feel to the beach. Possibly its proximity to the dump yields such an array of glass treasures, but collectors love this beach for its wide variety of shapes, colors and oddities.

    North Beach, Port Townsend

    • Lacking the lore of Glass Beach, North Beach is the better-known and larger beach to the south. It yields an array of colorful treasures. As the main beach in Port Townsend, it is easy to find and hosts summer events. Beachcombers searching for glass tend to have the best luck early in the morning, as the tide brings in the latest selection of shells, beach glass and flotsam to sift through. Many crafts and antiques in Port Townsend&'s shops are put together using this recycled material from the Pacific.

    Rosario Beach

    • A popular island spot for diving and viewing local wildlife, Rosario Beach can be accessed by ferry from Anacortes and is well-known for its beach glass offerings. The shallow depths of the water and smooth pebbled beaches are ideal for combing at low tide. This serves as a good base to explore the rest of Deception Pass State Park, which has other more remote beaches that may yield the type of colorful glass that makes collectors gasp.
