Collecting Wedgwood

The Wedgwood Pottery Company was founded by Josiah Wedgwood in 1759. Since then, the company has launched many successful patterns, including Queen's Ware and Black Basalt, but Wedgwood's best-known and most-collected innovation may be Jasperware, unglazed stoneware in blue, green, yellow, lilac, and black. Today the company produces clocks, vases, cutlery, and other accessories in addition to dinnerware.

When collecting Wedgwood, look for the company's name and logo on the back or bottom of a piece, and remember that the correct spelling has only one E. Reproductions with the incorrect "Wedgewood" stamp appear on the market.

Instructions

    • 1

Narrow your collection to one or two patterns or types of Wedgwood, and research those styles to learn about their identifying marks and values. Consult collectors' journals and online sources to educate yourself before you buy.

    • 2

Visit yard sales, flea markets, and consignment shops to find old and new pieces of Wedgwood.

    • 3

Check the household section of thrift stores. Valuable collectibles often end up in thrift stores without being identified. Visit stores regularly for the best chance of finding a Wedgwood treasure.

    • 4

Research online auctions for specific patterns and pieces.

    • 5

Shop antiques stores. Buying Wedgwood from a reputable antiques dealer is probably the most expensive option for a collector. However, the inventory at an antiques store may offer the most choices, and knowledgeable vendors are typically enthusiastic about answering your questions.
