How to Collect Antique Fish Dishes

Collect antique fish dishes to start a collection or to add to an existing aquatic theme. Antique fish dishes are beautiful, colorful and offer a stylized view of these underwater creatures. However, like other specialized antique dishes, fish dishes can be hard to find. Collecting them can be a treasure hunt.

Instructions

Decide on the scope of your collection. You can collect antique fish dishes in several ways, such as by type of dish or type of fish. Some antique fish dishes are shaped like fish. Other dishes range from portraying a single fish to an underwater scene complete with swimming fish and aquatic plants.

Visit antique shops. Look for antique fish dishes in local antique shops in your area and in cities and towns where you travel. Ask antique dealers to be on the lookout for antique fish dishes for you. Many antique stores have a wish list for customers to add items they are looking for. It's possible that antique dealers might pass up something obscure like a fish dishes unless you let them know you collect them. Leave your name and phone number so they can contact you if they find any examples.

Shop at thrift stores. People donate items nearly every day that become new inventory for thrift stores. The prices are more reasonable at thrift stores than at antique shops. Be sure to check the glass display cases in the front of the store where some thrift stores keep more unique items. If possible, ask the manager if you can leave your name and number so they can let you know if any antique fish dishes come in.

Check newspaper ads. Estate sales and antiques for sale by individual sellers are listed in the classified ad section of newspapers. Keep an eye out for antique fish dishes ads on a regular basis. If sellers don't list fish dishes specifically, call to ask what kind of dishes they have for sale.

    • 5

Search Craigslist ads. Go to Craigslist and look at your city and other cities if you're willing to pay for shipping. Enter "antique fish dishes" or simply "fish" in the search bar under the "For Sale, Antiques" category. If you are able to locate any listings that are a match, email the seller to find out more about the dishes.
