Read about antique sewing machines and educate yourself on the rarest and most valuable models. By knowing upfront which machines are the most valuable, you can constantly keep watch for the rarest machines as well as ensure you only pay a fair price for machines you find.
Look for antique sewing machines for sale. Flea markets, yard and garage sales and thrift shops offer the best deals because many times you can find sellers who do not know the value of the machine and are selling it for a lot less than it is worth. However, it is rare to discover antique sewing machines at such places because most people either hold onto their machines or seek out collectors when they are ready to part with a machine. Online merchants and online auctions have become the ideal place for purchasing collectible machines.
Inquire about the price of the machines an owner is seeking to sell. After you hear his price, you can determine if the owner is asking a fair price or seeking a value outside of what you are willing to pay. This is where you may run into trouble, as many people will throw a high price on a sewing machine just because it is old, when in reality many models of that machine exist and the machine is not rare enough for a high price tag.
Offer your knowledge on the item and make a price offer to the owner. You might be able to make a deal. If you are purchasing online, this may not be possible because you may have to bid with other competitors to win the machine. By letting an owner know what the fair price for that machine is, as well as the history, you may be able to bring down outrageous prices or give contact information to the owner in case she decides to sell at your price at a later time.
Locate an appraiser to price your collection items. Appraisers will let you know if you have overpaid for an item or if you have made a deal on a rare item. They may also be able to give you contact information for another collector who would be willing to purchase items from you at the appraised price.
