Locate on-line resources and shops to learn about the different patterns and textures made by the various manufacturers. Compare the characteristics of the coffee cup to this information.
Check the local library for books about collecting milk glass, such as "The Milk Glass Book" by Frank Chiarenza and Jim Slater or the "Collector's Encyclopedia of Milk Glass" by Betty and Bill Newbound, and look for information about cups.
Consult with local antique dealers to find an expert in milk glass and contact them for an evaluation of the coffee cup.
Compare the coffee cup to examples of other similar items you find either in one of the references or at antique shows and shops.
Look for a manufacturer's stamp on the bottom of the coffee cup. Some manufacturers stamped their pieces and some did not. If you do find a stamp or mark, check it in a reference work to pinpoint the manufacturer, which may also help you date the piece.
