Is Limoge Porcelain Dishwasher Safe?

Limoges is a high-quality porcelain, and collectors are often unsure how to clean Limoges dinnerware. Although some may want to set a table with Limoges porcelain for special occasions, dishwashers are not recommended for cleaning afterward.
  1. Porcelain

    • Porcelain is a high-quality ceramic that is fired at such high temperatures clay becomes vitrified (glass-like). Some types of porcelain dinnerware are dishwasher safe, but it depends on how it is decorated.

    Limoges

    • Limoges is French porcelain from the Limousin region, and Americans often know it by the trade name, Haviland. Limoges porcelain is unique because it is made plain white and decorated elsewhere by a studio.

    Porcelain Painting

    • It is the hand-painted decoration, both under-glaze and over-glaze, that makes Limoges so collectible. In addition to professional studios, porcelain painting became a popular Victorian hobby.

    Limoges and Dishwashers

    • It is recommended that Limoges dinnerware not be cleaned in a dishwasher, and hand-painted porcelain should never be placed in a dishwasher. Although modern Limoges is often dishwasher safe, the harsh detergents and action of a dishwasher will abrade the over-glaze decoration of antique Limoges.

    Hand Washing

    • Hand-painted Limoges should be hand-washed with a mild detergent and soft cloth. While cleaning, make sure you are not abrading or flecking off the decoration.
