How to Store Rare Books

Books often become our old friends. Timeless stories held within their pages take us on journeys of our hearts, minds and souls. For book lovers, finding rare books is special feeling. Often, the pages are worn and the bindings are weak, but their value lies in their existence. Storing these items properly is key for their survival.

      Remove all dust from your books using a soft cloth. Lay the books flat in a well-ventilated room to assure that they are dry.

      Clean your selected storage area. The space should be ample to lay books flat and stacked less than 3 feet in height. The space must be dry before placing your books on it for storage. The area you select should have a stable environment including temperatures consistently below 70 degrees.

      Line the shelf or area you have selected to store your books with archival paper. Place your first book on the paper flat, with it's title side up. Place a second piece of archival paper on top of the book. Stack a second book on top of the first and cover it with archival paper. Stack books up to three high.

      Continue stacking and covering your books until they are all in place. Put a final layer of archival paper over the top of the stacks.
