Information on Depression Glassware

Depression Glass is pressed glass that was made during the Depression time period. Even though the depression really began in 1929, glass is considered to be Depression Glass if it was made between the mid 1920s to the mid 1940s. The only exception to this is Pattern Glass, which was a heavier, pressed glass and was also made during this time period.

    • Many companies produced the glass in the United States. Companies that produced Depression Glass include Paden City, Morganton, Cambridge, Standard, Bartlett-Collins and Tiffin. The companies were located mainly in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, West Virginia and Oklahoma.

    Decorative

    • The glass came in a rainbow of colors, patterns and designs. Depression Glass was made into plates, bowls, glasses and even candlesticks and towel bars. It was a very popular inexpensive way to create decorative items.

    Inexpensive

    • Because the Depression Glass was very cheap, it was used widely by restaurants, theaters and grocery stores as incentives or giveaways. It was sold in drugstores and often contained flaws from the molds that were used during the manufacturing process.

    Collected

    • Today, Depression Glass is sought by collectors for is beauty and value. They collect the glass in two major categories, Depression Glass and Elegant Glass. Elegant Glass is more delicate and ornate and can be covered in etching.

    Variety

    • Besides the two most collected categories of Depression Glass, there is also glass that was created for the home, the kitchen and for children's playthings. The glass was made into everything from butter dishes to lamps and clocks.
