How to Identify Amberina Vases

The look of true Amberina glassware is very distinctive. This is due to gold being present in the batch during its flaming process. The crafting of this art glass was first patented in the late 1800s by Joseph Locke, a glass artisan with the New England Glass Company in Massachusetts. Whether it be a glass pitcher or a vase, there are ways to determine if you've got Amberina or not.

Instructions

    • 1

Look for the distinctive gradient in the glass. The first step in determining if you have a true Amberina vase is to look for the color gradient in the glass. The color should begin at one end (either the top or bottom) with a light amber color and gradually fade to a rich ruby or purple color.

    • 2

Study the vase under the light. You should not be able to see any clear delineations in the color breaks. The color should smoothly transition from one color to the other. The color should also be consistent and not wearing off in spots.

    • 3

Look for any scratches or peeling in the coloring. The color from true Amberina glass is within the glass and is not painted on or superficial in any way. If there is any sign of cracking or flaking in the color, then it is a reproduction.
