How to Identify Georg Jensen Flatware

Georg Jensen was a Danish silversmith whose work was popular in the early 1900s. He created a variety of silver items, but his flatware designs are the most sought-after pieces. Like most silversmiths, Jensen imprinted a stamp onto each piece to identify it as his design. The stamps varied over the course of his lifetime, but have several key features in common. The stamp is the most important part to check if you're attempting to identify authentic George Jensen silver pieces. It's located on the back of flatware and the bottom of most other silver items.

Instructions

    • 1

Look for a Georg Jensen flatware silver stamp that has the letters "G" and "J." The letters may appear in various sizes and fonts, and may occasionally be intertwined. These initialed stamps all date the Georg Jensen flatware to his early years, between 1904 and 1919. If the initials are surrounded by a square box, the flatware dates between 1933 and 1944.

    • 2

Run your finger over the Georg Jensen flatware stamp to see if the name George Jensen is raised. If the stamp has raised lettering, it dates to between 1915 and 1927.

    • 3

Examine the flatware mark to see if it looks like it was stamped with a series of tiny holes, called pinpricks. This pinprick pattern for the stamp dates to the 1930s.

    • 4

Check to see if the name is surrounded by a pinprick oval circle. The company started this stamping signature in 1945. Underneath this circle should be a Swedish dating code that indicates the year the Georg Jensen flatware was made.

Compare the flatware mark with images of Jensen's known marks in a book or online.
