How to Sell Antique Toys

Selling antique toys can be profitable and rewarding. Many collectors of old toys, games, dolls and cars are seeking something they had when they were a child. The options to deal in these items are plentiful, from selling online to selling in your own area--most easy with a little work. With minimal research and sleuthing, selling antique toys can become a fun pastime and something in which you can make money.

Instructions

Locate toys. If you have them already to sell, move to Step 2. If you are looking to acquire some, check local newspaper or online guides in your area for flea markets, estate sales and auctions. Avoid paying high prices for antique toys to resell until you become familiar with their value.

Determine value. For the beginner, antique toy and price guides are a must. Local bookstores offer a few varieties, one, called "Toys and Prices" and published each year, contains a plethora of information. Others offer comprehensive antique guides that have a large section of toys included. Internet sites can be a good source of identifying your toys, but do your own research of what to sell them for. Keep a notebook, recording information with your pen on different toys so that you have additional methods of reference.

Sell your toys. There are several ways to sell.

On online auction sites, you will sell your antique toys to the highest bidder. If you are concerned with losing a toy at auction for less than what you feel is fair, you can list as a "reserve" auction item. Auction selling will include listing fees and selling fees. Auction benefits include bidding wars, wherein your item may sell for more than what you wanted and reserve pricing options to ensure your item receives a minimum price that you set.

Online antique malls or shops are another outlet for selling online, offering online stores for monthly fees. This is a way to sell your toys at your asking price. Fees may include a monthly shop fee, listing and final sales fees.

Keep in mind all online payment methods may also incur fees for auctions, or any online selling.

Local toy shows and antique shows are also a great way to sell your antique toys. They are usually advertised in your local paper, or in an online events section. Normally, they just charge you a per diem table rate.

Additional options include a booth or showcase in a local antique mall. Visit one to see your options, making sure to talk to other dealers first.

Keep good records and adhere to local guidelines. Ensure that you are in compliance with applicable tax laws in your state. Some states require a tax ID for such selling; others require it to be listed as additional income on your tax returns. Keeping a notebook of purchase price, sales price and listing any extra expenses (travel may apply) will also come in handy.
