Duncan Miller Glass Identification

The best way to identify Duncan-Miller glass is to become familiar with glassware produced by the company yourself. The colors, forms and patterns of Duncan-Miller are distinctive when compared with others of the period.
  1. History

    • Although John Ernest Miller went to work for Duncan Glass Company in 1874, the Duncan-Miller period is set from 1893 to 1955, when the company closed its doors for the last time.

    Forms

    • The factory produced a variety of decorative and useful objects from candelabras, compotes and vases to cigarette cases and cologne bottles. Their swan bowls are particularly prized by collectors.

    Body

    • Most Duncan-Miller tableware was produced in crystal and transparent soda glass. Decorative items were produced in both transparent and opalescent colored glasses. Milk glass production ceased before WWII.

    Colors

    • Colors range from clear to peach crystal to deep cobalt and ruby, as well as the popular Vaseline yellow and emerald green. Opalescent glasses include blue, pink and yellow.

    Patterns

    • Become acquainted with the company's distinctive patterns, such as Monticello, First Love and Sandwich as well as the more common Polka Dot and Hobnail.
