Most Appropriate Uses of Antique Indigo Fabric

Indigo fabrics date from the mid-1800s to the mid-1900s. They are a deep and elegant blue with patterns in white. The characteristic look of these textiles is created by using a resist on white fabric, then dyeing it to dark blue. These hemp and cotton fabrics were produced and used by the working classes. Turtles, fish and cranes are common motifs on antique indigo fabric.
  1. Identification and Appraisal

    • Examine a piece of antique indigo fabric carefully. Consider the quality of the dye and of the garment itself. Intact garments should be preserved; however, damaged or worn garments can be salvaged to create new and different items for your home. More elaborate patterns on indigo fabrics will increase their value. Consult a textile historian if you are unsure of the value of your antique indigo fabrics.

    Framing

    • Framing an antique indigo garment or yardage is an excellent way to use this beautiful piece of craftsmanship in your home. A large and intact garment can be mounted and framed with the help of a skilled framer or preservationist. Smaller pieces can easily be framed at home. Stitch the fabric around padded acid-free mat board, then place it into a frame. Use a mat or spacer to allow for air circulation. Less valuable antique indigo fabric can be stapled around canvas stretcher bars and hung for an affordable display.

    Re-purposing

    • Lower quality, damaged or worn indigo fabrics can be reused or re-purposed into new and attractive home accents. You can use these cotton or hemp fabrics in quilts and other patchwork applications. Pillows and table runners can be made with larger pieces of indigo fabric. Use smaller scraps for borders, trims and accents in your home. Fortunately, the hard-wearing nature of these antique peasant fabrics has allowed them to survive and remain durable enough to use and enjoy. You can also use your antique indigo fabric to make a bag or accent a bag, but choose durable modern fabrics for the lining.
