What is Gien?

Gien is a type of earthenware. It originated in 1821, and pieces are still being manufactured today. Gien is considered to be some of the finest quality earthenware that is produced in France.
  1. Thomas Hall

    • Thomas Hall founded the factory of Gien in 1821. Originally the style of Gien was more functional, such as tableware, but then became more ornate.

    Rouennais Pattern

    • This style was made from 1860 to 1875, and are known for its "horn of plenty" design.

    Italian Style

    • The designs for the Italian patterns mirrored Renaissance images, such as goddesses or lovers.

    Delft Patterns

    • This type of style was adorned with floral patterns, Chinese themes, and were decorated in blue and white.

    English Wedgwood

    • These pieces are identified by their bluish-white or mauve/blue hues.

    The Far East

    • This style of pottery has a Japanese flare to it.
