How to Wind a Vintage Watch

Vintage watches are manual, meaning they must be wound once every one or two days to keep telling time. Modern watches automatically wind with regular movement, and never have to be wound manually.

Instructions

    • 1

Put the watch in your left hand and put your thumb and forefinger on the winding stem, also known as the crown.

    • 2

Turn the stem forwards or away from you to wind the watch. When you hold the watch to your ear you should hear a fast clicking sound.

    • 3

Stop winding the watch when you feel resistance. Don't over wind the watch. You should be able to feel resistance after roughly 15 turns of the stem.

    • 4

Hold the watch up to your ear and listen. When the watch is finished winding, the fast clicking sound mentioned in Step 2 will stop. Do not under wind your watch, or it will not keep time accurately.
