How to Refinish a Dansk Product

Dansk is a Scandinavian dinnerware collection that became popular just after World War II. The clean, practical lines of the company's dinnerware made it a great success, and the introduction of wooden products made the collection valuable to collectors. Dansk's teak wood salt and pepper shakers, wooden salad bowls and utensils are all beautifully crafted items. Wood products are often damaged over time by water or cleaners. When using a wood product for food consumption, refinish with special care.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the Dansk wood product with a nontoxic cleaner. A sticky finish on the wood is a buildup that needs to be removed. Allow it to dry thoroughly.

    • 2

Sand the dry piece with a fine grit sandpaper.

    • 3

Wipe the sand or grit from the piece's surface.

    • 4

Heat the piece in a 150 degree oven for 15 minutes.

    • 5

Rub the surface of the wood with mineral oil or salad bowl refinisher, a product made for refinishing food products. Regular refinishing oils are not edible and regular food oils like olive, vegetable and canola will get rancid after a while.

    • 6

Allow the wood to cool and wipe off any remaining oil. Rub briskly to a dry shine.
