Red Wing Pottery was founded in Red Wing, Minn. in the 1860s. The company grew in popularity when they began making glazed stoneware and pottery at the turn of the 20th Century. The company is known for a distinct trademark it stamps underneath the glaze on its products that features a bird and flower design. Red Wing also stamps a maker's mark that contains the date and the potter's mark. However, the company did not begin stamping the logo and mark until 1906, so any Red Wing ware produced before that time will need to be evaluated by an expert.

Contact a Red Wing antique expert for help ascertaining an exact date if your stamp only lists a patent date. Some older stoneware crocks are stamped with the patent date for design of the handles and do not reflect the year the crock was manufactured.
