Features
A wood lathe lamp will not be completely manufactured from wood. The cylinder that houses the wick will be either manufactured from glass or brass. Wood lathe lamp oil goes through a refinement process that ensures it is safe to burn within enclosed areas and does not produce much smoke. It also does not produce a large amount of smoke or other pollutants, such as carbon monoxide.
Types
Wood lathe lamp oils will have a clear appearance unless otherwise noted by the manufacturer. Special lamp oils can have dyes added to create a special ambiance while burning the fuel in the wood lathe lamp. You can also add different scents, including vanilla, rose and lavender.
Considerations
You can find numerous top brands of lamp oil to use in your wood lathe lamp. Popular brands include Clear Medallion, Lamplight, Crystal Clear and Green Leaf. Most lamp oils are sold in quart size and larger quantities.
Use
Once you purchase a wood lathe lamp oil, you can fill the reservoir of the lamp prior to lighting. Make sure you are careful to not spill or overfill the reservoir, as the substance is extremely flammable. You should keep at least a ½ inch of space at the top of the wood lamp's reservoir before screwing the top of the lamp back on. Clean the wick and trim it down if necessary before lighting the wood lathe oil lamp. To extinguish, you can usually just blow the wick out.
Warning
Do not use any substances that are not designated as lamp oil for your lighting fixture. Using alcohol, kerosene or other types of gasoline is extremely dangerous and can start a fire. It can also expose you to harmful environmental substances, especially if you light the lamp inside.
