History of a Fostoria Crystal

The Fostoria Glass Company was, at one time, the largest glass company in the United States. Much of its production after 1920 focused on handmade crystal glassware. It began operations on December 15, 1887, and after a forced sale to a large conglomerate, reduced manufacturing through the mid-1980s. Its doors were closed by the end of 1986.

Early Beginnings
- The Fostoria Glass Company set up manufacturing in Fostoria, Ohio, in 1887. The city was home to numerous glass factories because the area had vast supplies of inexpensive natural gas.
Relocation
- A decline in the supply of gas in Ohio led to the company's move to Moundsville, West Virginia, in 1891.
Introduction of Crystal
- Early glass production focused on pressed glass, but by 1920, Fostoria Glass introduced blown glass crystal pieces with 24 percent lead content. The company led the way in producing a full line of crystal dinner service.
Advertising
- Fostoria was an advertising pioneer in 1924 with a national campaign to promote its crystal glassware.
Etched Crystal
- The company was noted for its etched crystal glasswork. Presidents Eisenhower, Nixon, Carter, George H.W. Bush and Reagan used custom crystal dinnerware with presidential seals in the White House.
Closing
- The Fostoria Company was sold to Lancaster Colony in 1983. Lancaster ceased operations in 1986.
