Instructions
Choose an index or keyboard type to collect. A keyboard typewriter is set up the same way as most modern typewriters with a set of characters that need to be pressed in order for the letter to appear. An index typewriter uses a movable wheel to choose the characters that are typed.
Check for a typebar on the antique typewriter. A typebar on a typewriter is a lever that is used to choose between different characters that may be found on each individual key.
Identify the typewriter's brand. The most popular manufacturers of antique typewriters include Remington, Simplex, Hammond and Underwood. Finding out the brand helps you date and estimate the value of the model.
Find out the value of the piece. There is no standard guide to pricing antique typewriters. Your best bet is to speak to an antiques dealer about the typewriter's value.
Complete the restoration process. It increases the value if you hire someone to restore the machine.
