Things You'll Need
Instructions
Remove frayed or broken ropes. Unlock them by going to the corresponding hole int the side of the bed and placing the rope bed tightening wrench. Turn it to the left until it is loosened. Then, remove the knot it in the hole and pull it out. Replace the ropes with nylon ropes of the same size. Loop them through the corresponding holes and knot them in place. Make sure they weave in with the intersecting ropes correctly. They should go over and then under the intersecting ropes.
Tighten the ropes so that the bed ropes are taut. Use a rope bed tightening wrench. It looks like a wooden peg. Along the side of the bed there are holes where the ropes loop through. Stick the tip of the wrench in and turn clockwise to tighten. Go to each hole on each side and tighten.
Lay out a tarp and move the bed on to the tarp. Put on latex gloves. If the bed has been painted, brush on paint stripper, wait for the paint to bubble up and then scrape the paint off.
Sand the bed down. Sand away any remaining paint on the bed or any finish until you are down to the bare wood. Doing this by hand is best because you can get into the grooves and engravings of the bed without damaging them.
Apply a coat of stain in your choice of color. Let this dry and then brush on a second coat. Continue this until the color is the shade you want.
Apply a coat of polyurethane to seal the wood and finish. This will protect the bed from moisture in the air and give it a sheen. You will have to wait for the polyurethane to dry for at least 24 hours. Do not touch it during this time because it is tacky and will leave a blemish in the finish.
