How to Get Stains Out of Antique Quilts

Removing a stain from an antique quilt can seem a daunting task because of delicate vintage fabric. Stains are primarily either water- or oil-based. The way these two types of stains are handled is different, so it is necessary to determine what type of stain is on your quilt. If the origin of the stain cannot be determined, treat it as an oil-based stain, because applying liquid may set an oil-based stain. Experts recommend leaving the stain if these methods are not effective.

Instructions

    • 1

Pre-treat water-based stains with a non-detergent liquid soap designed for delicate textiles such as Linen Wash or Woolite.

    • 2

Pre-treat oil-based stains with an oxygen-based cleaner such as Oxy Clean, mixed with a small amount of hot water until a thick paste is created. Apply this without using any other water. Allow to sit for several hours, then wipe off with a clean towel. Repeat if necessary.

    • 3

Wash the quilt in a large washing machine, using cold water and your non-detergent liquid soap. Cold water is less damaging on delicate fabrics than hot water.

    • 4

Dry in a shaded spot outside while laying flat.
