Instructions
Wear clean, cotton gloves when handling old documents. The oils on your fingers can damage old photographs and important antique documents.
Remove the document or photo from its original frame, if necessary. The materials traditionally used in framing can destroy the integrity of the document. The cardboard backing of the frame, in particular, is often acid-based. The mat and adhesive materials historically used in framing can also damage materials.
Frame the document using conservation glass that filters harmful ultra-violet light. Light rays can fade and overexpose photos and documents.
Select starch paste hinges and acid-free mats. Ensure that the document does not press against the glass. The mat should be thick enough to keep the glass and the document separate.
Hang the framed document in a dry, humidity-controlled environment. Attics and basements without insulation expose documents to extreme temperatures. Keep documents away from oil-based paints, harsh chemicals and cleaning products. The fumes may damage your antique document.
