How to Identify Antique Royal Typewriters

Typewriters were the first word processing machines. Some were portable, which came with cases, and were lighter weight than the stationary models. The Royal company manufactured typewriters beginning in 1906 with the Royal #1. The company continued manufacturing the series until the 1970s. Since this time the Royal company has been bought out by several different companies, but has never manufactured another typewriter in the Royal series. There are key elements of a Royal typewriter that allow collectors and enthusiasts to identify them from other antique typewriters.

Instructions

    • 1

Look at the center of the typewriter above the keyboard. It should say "Royal" there. If it does not then it is not a Royal typewriter. The older models are imprinted behind where you insert the paper in the center, instead of behind the keyboard.

    • 2

Turn over the typewriter. Look for a serial number imprinted on the base of typewriter.
