Things You'll Need
Instructions
Put on your safety equipment to protect your eyes and hands. You may also want to wear an apron to protect your clothing from chemical stains.
Clean the dirt off the object by washing it with dish soap and water. Remove stubborn dirt and debris with a wire brush.
Mix a solution of water and vinegar in a bucket or bowl large enough to contain the iron object. Mix one part vinegar to one part water.
Submerge the relic in the water and vinegar solution and leave it soak for a few hours. Six to eight hours is usually enough to loosen and remove the rust.
Remove the iron from the solution and scrub it clean with the wire brush. This will remove most of the stuck-on rust and restore the look of the relic. Wipe the item with a clean cloth.
Clean the relic with soap and water again, then spray it with oven cleaner and wrap it in a plastic bag. Leave it sit for six to eight hours. The oven cleaner will neutralize the chemicals in the vinegar and prevent it from continuing to eat away at the iron.
Rinse the item one final time with clean water and wipe it dry with a clean, dry cloth.
