How to Maintain the Temperature in a Humidor

Cigar collecting can become an expensive hobby. Some high quality cigars can cost hundreds of dollars and must be stored properly to maintain their flavor and freshness. Like fine wine, cigars must be stored at the right temperature and humidity level to prevent spoilage. The ideal temperature range for a humidor is between 68-75F. If a humidor is too cold, the humidity can cause the cigars to dampen and grow mold. Too warm, and tobacco beetle larvae inside the cigars could become active and devour your collection. Maintaining a constant temperature in your humidor is all about where you store it.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide which room of your home you are going to store your cigars in. Humidors should be kept out of direct sunlight, away from heating or AC vents and electrical equipment that generates heat.

    • 2

Place the digital room thermometer in the area where you'd like to store the cigars. Monitor the temperature every hour for several hours to make sure it is consistent. If it changes frequently choose another location.

    • 3

Place your humidor in the space you've monitored. Remember, you want it to remain between 68-75F. Leave the digital room thermometer next to the humidor so you always know what the ambient temperature surrounding the humidor is. It may be necessary to change humidor locations as the seasons change. If so, use the digital room thermometer to scout a new location.
