How to Fix a Humidor's Temperature

Most humidors should have an operating temperature around 64 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit to ensure the cigars inside are kept in the best condition and age properly. When the temperature is not in the suggested range, the cigars can be ruined by such things as tobacco worms, mold or extreme drying of the tobacco and wrap. Fixing the temperature of a humidor can be a lengthy process and should be done as soon as a temperature fluctuation is noticed in order to preserve the cigars. It is important to remember that when placing new cigars into a humidor, there will be expected changes in temperature and humidity, and it is not normally something to worry about.

Instructions

    • 1

Refill the humidor with distilled water. If there is not enough distilled water in the humidor, the humidity will drop as the cigars take in what humidity is left. To refill the humidor, open it up and remove the humidifier from within. Partially fill a container with distilled water and place the humidifier inside, with the gold plate on the bottom. Allow the humidifier to soak for around five minutes before removing it and wiping it down with a towel to remove excess liquid.

    • 2

Ensure the humidor has been properly moistened before use. If not, remove the cigars from the humidor before doing so. Remove the cigars and wipe the insides of the humidor down with a towel soaked in distilled water. Place a glass filled with distilled water inside the humidor and close it for about three days. This ensures the lining of the humidor does not soak up all of the moisture and cause temperature and humidity changes. Placing the glass inside the humidor does not replace the necessity of refilling the humidifier, and is only used to moisten the interior walls of the humidifier to prevent them from absorbing the humidity provided by the humidifier.

    • 3

Change the humidor's location. Storing the humidor in cold or dark areas such as wine cellars can cause unforeseen drops in temperature and humidity, and can cause the cigars inside to dry out.

    • 4

Ensure that the humidor is not placed in direct sunlight or high temperature areas. Such conditions are much more damaging to the cigars than cold conditions, as the humidor's conditions could cause a buildup of mold or tobacco worms, which will ruin the effected cigars. Tobacco worms can be noticed in cigars by the small holes made in the outer leaves of the tobacco. Mold can be noticed by distinctive blue-green marks anywhere on the cigar. If either does occur, it is important to dispose of the infected cigars, remove any clean cigars and clean the interior of the humidor before placing any clean cigars back in.
