How Do I Humidify a Humidor?

A humidor is a wooden box designed to keep cigars at a specific temperature and humidity level. The goal is to re-create a tropical atmosphere, akin to the one in which most cigars are made, to keep the cigars fresher, longer. A humidor contains a humidifier unit that you must charge in order to humidify the box. You must also humidify the exposed wood of the humidor's interior. A humidor's interior moisture level is measured by its hygrometer.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the humidor. Soak a clean sponge in distilled water. Wipe the exposed wood surfaces inside the humidor with the wet sponge.

    • 2

Lay a plastic bag on the bottom of the humidor. Soak the sponge in distilled water again and place it on the plastic bag. Close the lid and leave the sponge inside the humidor for 8 hours so the wood can soak up the moisture.

    • 3

Open the lid and feel the sponge. If it's dry, soak it again in the distilled water; then place it back on the piece of plastic. If it's still wet, leave it there. Close the lid and wait another 8 hours. Open the lid and remove the sponge.

    • 4

Pour humidor activation solution into a squirt bottle. The activation solution contains distilled water and propylene glycol. Squirt the solution through one of the vents in the humidifier unit inside the humidor. (The humidifier unit is a small square box on the side or bottom of the humidor; it may be attached to the box with Velcro.) Completely fill the humidifier unit with the solution.

    • 5

Remove the full humidifier unit. Turn it upside-down and place it on a towel. Leave it for 30 minutes. Any excess solution will soak into the towel. Turn the humidifier right-side up and wipe it down with the towel. Replace the humidifier unit.

Check the hygrometer of your humidor once every two weeks. When the humidity level drops to 67 percent, refill the humidifier with distilled water only. Also use distilled water for your next refill. On your third refill, use activation solution.
