How to Fill a Cigar Lighter

According to Cigar Aficionado, cigars should be lit with a match or a butane lighter. Butane is recommended for lighters because it is an odorless, tasteless gas that will not interfere with the taste of the cigar like lighter fluid will. Butane is sold in pressurized cans with tips designed to interface with whatever lighters they are going to fill. Check the tip interface on your lighter before you buy the butane.

Instructions

    • 1

Twist the lighter's flame-height adjustment counterclockwise to set the flame to the lowest level. This adjustment may be a large flat head screw or a knob of some sort. Often it has a plus (+) sign for higher flame and a minus (-) sign for lower flame. Do not force the screw or knob. If it is not turning easily, it is likely at the limit of the adjustment in that direction.

    • 2

Press the corner of the screwdriver on the fill hole at the bottom of the lighter while holding the fill hole facing up. Gently increase the pressure on the valve until you begin to hear a hissing sound letting you know that excess air in the system is escaping. Hold the valve open like this until all the hissing stops.

    • 3

Shake the refill can for 10 to 15 seconds. Put the nozzle of the refill against the lighter fill valve, with both the lighter and can held upside down. Press the can straight toward the lighter and hold it for ten seconds. Remove the can from the lighter. Check the fuel gauge on your lighter (if equipped). Repeat the process to add more fuel if necessary.

    • 4

Wait for the lighter to return to room temperature after filling it with butane. It should warm up after a few minutes. Re-adjust the flame to the height you desire by turning the screw or knob in a clockwise position.
