How to Store Pipe Tobacco

When considering how to store your pipe tobacco, you might feel compelled to store it in the same manner as a cigar. However, this is a mistake. According to Pipes Magazine, cigars will absorb the taste and aroma of the pipe tobacco, when the two are stored together and a humidor will suck the moisture from the tobacco. Like cigars, there is a specific manner in which tobacco should be stored to retain its flavor and age perfectly.

Store your tobacco in the sealed tin until opened. Once opened, store it in an airtight glass jar. Purchase canning jars or mason jars for your tobacco. Sterilize the jar and lid before use, by washing both with hot, soapy water and submerging them in boiling water for 10 minutes. Use a paper towel to wipe the jar and lid. Place both upside down in a dish rack or on a paper towel and allow them to completely dry.

Place the tobacco in the dry jar and screw the lid on tight. Write the type of tobacco and current date on a label. Apply the label to the tin or jar.

Store your tin or jar of tobacco in a cool place with a typical temperature of 60 to 70 degrees F. Place the tobacco in a dark location where it is not exposed to light for long periods.
