How to Break In a Humidor Correctly

A humidor is a box designed to maintain a constant humidity and temperature for storing sensitive items, most commonly cigars and cigarettes. Before you can actually use your humidor, though, you need to reintroduce the humidity that it will retain. You can easily break in your new humidor and avoid damaging it by following these simple steps.

Things You'll Need

  • Humidor with humidifier and hygrometer
  • Distilled water

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the humidifier with distilled water and set it into the bracket in the humidor. Wipe off any water that got onto the outside of the humidifier before setting it into the humidor.

    • 2

Fill a shot glass with distilled water and place it in the lower section of the humidor. Make sure the glass is sitting flat on the bottom of the case.

    • 3

Put the hygrometer into the humidor next to the shot glass. The hygrometer display should be facing up so you can see the reading without removing it form the humidor.

    • 4

Shut the lid of the humidor and set it aside where it will not be moved or bothered.

    • 5

Check the hygrometer every day to determine when the humidor is rehydrated. When the reading shows anything between 68 degrees and 72 degrees Fahrenheit, you can remove the shot glass and start to use the humidor.
