Humidor Kit
A humidor is basically a box that provides relative humidity for cigars. The humidor is usually an elegant-looking box made of wood that is easily stored on a desktop or sideboard. Humidors can range from the very basic---under $20---to high-end models costing over $5,000. They contain three pieces: a humidifier, a hygrometer and a thermometer. These three parts help keep the cigars at a relative humidity of 62 to 70 percent.
Humidifier
The humidifier is a plastic container with holes that contains a sponge or foam. The foam is the type commonly used by florists to support and water flowers, and is dark green in color. It has been treated to kill bacteria and releases just enough moisture to keep a Rh of 70 percent. Generally, the humidifiers are thin and flat and are placed on the inside of the box lid. The foam is removed, soaked with distilled water and placed back into its casing in the humidor, where it will slowly release its liquid over time.
Hygrometer
This is a device---either analog or digital---that measures the humidity inside of the humidor. You can check your cigars' moisture level by feeling them, but the less cigars are handled, the better. Therefore, a hygrometer keeps you abreast of the humidor's humidity level without your having to handle the cigars.
Thermometer
Cigars should not be over 72 degrees Fahrenheit at any given time, lest they become susceptible to insects. Keep a thermometer in the humidor if at all possible to protect your investment and keep your cigars ready to use.
