How to Humidify a Cigar Humidor

The use of humidors is becoming increasingly popular among cigar aficionados. A humidor is a sealed box used for storing and aging cigars, protecting the cigars by keeping them at a specific temperature and humidity. According to several cigar humidor websites, including Cigar-Info-Guide.com and NeptuneCigar.com, the ideal humidity level for your humidor is approximately 70 percent.

Instructions

Locate the humidifier on your humidor. The humidifier is a plastic cartridge with green sponge-like foam inside it. It is usually attached with Velcro, either at the bottom of the humidor or on the inside lid. Some older humidors do not come with humidifiers. If this is the case you can measure the dimensions of your humidifier lid and purchase one that will fit. Affix it to the inside of your lid with Velcro. However, most newer model humidors come with a humidifier.

Treat the green foam of the humidifier with activation solution if you are setting up your humidor for the first time. This solution, which is a mix of distilled water and propylene glycol, should be applied to the humidifier foam. Use a dry cloth to wipe up any excess solution and then affix the humidifier to the lid of your humidor. Activation solution should be applied about once every six months.

Add distilled water to your humidifier if humidity level drops below 65 percent. Do this by removing the humidifier and adding a few drops of distilled water to it. Use a rag to wipe up any excess water.

Check the humidity levels in your humidor once every two weeks. This can be done by using a digital hygrometer/thermometer. The temperature inside your humidor should fall between 70 to 73 degrees Fahrenheit and the humidity level should be between 65 to 74 percent.
