How to Make a Makeshift Humidor

A humidor is a necessity for proper storage of good cigars. To promote proper aging and prevent excessive drying, cigars should be stored below 75 degrees Fahrenheit, and humidity in the container should be maintained at between 60 and 70 percent. The cost of professionally built humidors generally ranges from 50 to several hundred dollars, depending on size, material and construction. For those who would rather spend money on cigars than a place to put them, a home-built solution can produce good results.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the cedar shims flat on the bottom of the food storage container side by side to form an even layer. Use a utility knife to trim them to size if necessary.

    • 2

Place a plastic soap dish in one end of the food storage container on top of the cedar shims.

    • 3

With a sharp knife, cut a block of green florist foam to fit inside the soap dish. Use the type of foam that absorbs water and is used for live flower arrangements, not the dry type used for artificial flowers.

    • 4

Place the foam inside the soap dish.

    • 5

Dampen the foam with a 50/50 mixture of propylene glycol and distilled water.

    • 6

Place your cigars directly on top of the cedar lining in the container and seal the lid.
