Proper Humidor Humidity

A humidor is a storage and aging device used by cigar collectors. Humidors keep a fine cigar in the right conditions, regulating temperature, light levels and humidity for the perfect smoking experience. Getting the humidity right is essential for a properly maintained humidor.
  1. Humidifier

    • Set up your humidifier to maintain the correct humidity in your humidor. Remove the humidifier from its packaging. Take distilled water or a humidification solution of 50 percent distilled water and 50 percent propylene glycol and squirt it into the front of the humidifier. Do not wet the humidifier so that it is dripping; only moisten it. Wipe off the humidifier and place it into the humidor. Adjust the humidity in the humidor by adding distilled water to the humidifier if the humidity drops. If the humidity is too high, add some humidification solution.

    Correct Humidity

    • Measure your humidity using a hygrometer to ensure your cigars are safe. The ideal humidity inside a humidor is 70 percent but the range in which cigars can survive in is wider; 65 to 75 percent is an acceptable range for the cigars to stay moist but not spongy. The hygrometer, a small humidity and temperature reading device, can usually be found on the lid of the humidor. Check it regularly. A hygrometer usually has a 1 to 2 percent error margin, so keep that in mind before trying to raise or lower the humidity inside the humidor.

    Curing the Humidor

    • When you purchase a humidor, cure it to achieve the correct humidity level. With the hygrometer and the humidifier inside the humidor, place a small shot glass full of distilled water inside and close the lid. Allow the humidor to heat the water inside over a 72-hour period, checking the hygrometer regularly. Once the hygrometer has reached a reading of 68 to 72 percent, the humidor has stabilized the environment inside and its ready to store your cigars.
