Humidor Maintenance

Proper humidor maintenance is essential to keeping your cigars at the right moisture levels and to avoid mold. Not maintaining your humidor properly can ruin pricey cigars. Maintaining your humidor takes a few steps and keeps your cigars healthy.
  1. Activation Solution

    • Rub down the inside of your humidor regularly with an activation solution. An activation solution is a 50/50 mixture of propylene glycol and distilled water. Propylene glycol humidifies and absorbs excess liquid from the humidifier as well as killing bacteria that may cause mold. Apply the solution every one to three months. To apply, rinse the humidifier with distilled water and let it dry.

    Hygrometer Calibration

    • Check the hygrometer on a regular basis to make sure it is reading levels correctly. Place a small amount of salt into a bottle cap and put in a few drops of water, making sure not to dissolve the water. Place the bottle cap and your hygrometer into a plastic bag and seal it, making sure not to spill any of the solution. Allow the salt and hygrometer to rest in the bag for six hours, then check the hygrometer reading. The hygrometer should read 75 percent. If it is high or low it needs to be adjusted to 75 percent. Do this by turning the screw on the back.

    Regular Cleaning

    • Remove your cigars once a month and clean the inside of the humidor with a clean cloth and distilled water. Wipe the trays and dividers as well as the walls. After cleaning, place a glass of distilled water inside the humidor for a 72-hour period. If you do not want your cigars out in the elements for this long, heat the distilled water in the microwave and then leave it in the humidor for 24 hours.
