What to Do If You Don't Have a Humidor?

Cigars are great to smoke or as collectables. Most serious collectors own a humidor, a small case used to keep cigars at the optimum temperature and moisture for aging. If you do not have the money or are not sure you want to be a serious collector, there are a few short-term storage options available.
  1. Plastic Bag

    • If you have removed the cigar from its wrapping, store the cigars in a plastic bag. Keep your cigar in a dark part of the house where the temperature is consistent at or below 75 degrees. Try to keep it in a place where the humidity is around 70 percent if possible. Keeping the cigar in a plastic bag will keep it fresh for a few weeks until it begins drying out. If the cigar begins to dry, put a small piece of paper that has been lightly wetted into the bag and store so that the paper is not touching the cigar.

    Container

    • Store your cigars in a plastic container to keep them fresh; plastic containers keep out moisture and mold, maintaining the freshness of the cigar. Open the container once a month to check whether the cigar is drying out. Plastic containers do not allow a cigar to breath, causing moisture issues. If it is drying out, put in a wetted piece of paper. You should be able to keep a cigar in a plastic container for a few months.

    Case or Pouch

    • If you are storing your cigar for a short period, buy a cigar case or humidor pouch. A cigar case is airtight and keeps the cigar from breaking, bending or losing its flavor. A good cigar case can keep the cigar smokable for a week or two before it begins drying out. Buy a humidor pouch for longer periods. A humidor pouch can be used to keep your cigar moist for a short period. A humidor pouch will keep your cigars fresh and moist for 90 days by providing ample moisture and temperature for the cigar.
