How to Choose Cigar Humidifiers

Cigars need humidity to remain fresh or else they dry out. A humidifier helps preserve cigars and keeps them good for years. Properly charged with distilled water a humidifier maintains the needed 65 to 70 percent humidity. Choosing the right type of humidifier depends on the size of the humidor or traveling case. They come in passive and active systems.

Instructions

  1. Choose a Passive Humidifier

    • 1

Consider a passive humidifier for small to large tabletop humidors. These plastic devices require no battery pack or electrical outlet.

    • 2

Look inside your humidor to see any dedicated spaces for a humidifier. Measure the size for correct fittings. Many humidors take a rectangular or round shaped device.

    • 3

Buy a small travel humidifier for a traveling case. These add moisture to about a dozen or less cigars. Choose a suitable size for the case. Look for average sizes of 6 by 1/2 inch or small circular humidifiers a couple of inches in diameter.

    • 4

Choose a one cigar carrying tube with humidifier inside.

    • 5

Purchase disposable humidor pouches, tubes or bags. These maintenance free systems come in several sizes and last up to 6 months without adding water. They also keep a proper 70 percent humidity level.

    Choose an Active Humidifier

    • 6

Purchase an electronic humidifier for larger humidors and furniture cabinets. They come with a chargeable battery pack and paper thin electrical cord.

    • 7

Choose between table top or cabinet style humidors. Expect average measurements of 6 x 2 x 3 1/2 inches.

    • 8

Buy a sealed water cartridge that's good for about a year. The active humidifiers need replacement distilled water cartridges and battery packs.

    • 9

Keep extra batteries on hand for replacement, usually AA.
