How to Get Toning off of Proof Coins

Proof coins are uncirculated coins that have been minted with a specially treated and polished die. This process gives proof coins a special frosted look on the raised parts of the coin and a polished mirror shine on the background of the coin. This proofing process sets them apart from regular and even other uncirculated coins. Like all coins, they are susceptible to toning, which is a patina or tarnish that covers the surface of the coin due to exposure to the elements or chemicals. Removing toning from proof coins can be done with a special solvent that the coins are wiped with.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a small amount of non-abrasive coin cleaning solvent in a ceramic or glass bowl; do not use a metal bowl as it may interact with the solvent and transfer to your coins.

    • 2

Dip the tip of a cotton swab in the solvent and rub it gently against the surface of the coin.

    • 3

Discard the cotton swab as it gets dirty and continue with a new cotton swab. Brush the front and back surfaces of the coin.

    • 4

Gently wipe the surfaces of the coin with a paper towel and set side on a clean paper towel

    • 5

Repeat Steps 2, 3 and 4 for all of your tarnished proof coins.
