How to Sell Wheat-Backed Pennies

The wheat-backed penny is part of the Abraham Lincoln penny series. The Lincoln penny replaced the Indian Head penny in 1909 and is still in production today. The front of the Lincoln penny has not changed since the 1909 introduction and is based upon a bust of Lincoln created by Victor David Brenner. The wheat-backed design was used on the back of the penny from 1909 to 1958. During these years the pennies were made of bronze, zinc-coated steel and copper.

Instructions

Find the year your penny was made. This information is on the right side of the front of the penny. Different years fetch different sums from coin collectors. The 1922 penny is exceptionally value because of a mishap in the creation of some pennies.

    • 2

Determine the material the penny was made from. Bronze pennies date from 1909 to 1942 and 1944 to 1958 and zinc-coated steel pennies were made in 1943 because of shortages caused by World War II. Some copper pennies were accidentally produced in 1943 and are extremely rare and valuable.
