How to Tell if an 1870 One Yen Is Real

The first coins minted in the nation of Japan date from the year 708 AD. From that time until 1870, the Japanese used many imported Chinese coins for currency. Then in 1870, Japan adopted the Yen as the currency of the nation. Coin collectors consider a coin from this date a great find. But, they would want to know they aren't getting a counterfeit as the pieces are often copied and sold. With a bit of vigilance you can make sure you are getting an original and not a counterfeit.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure that the coin in question is made of silver. An original is made of silver and no other metal. Check this with a reputable jeweler or coin dealer. The American Numismatic Association maintains a list of member dealers at their website.

    • 2

Make sure the coin looks correct. An 1870 one yen has a coiled dragon on one side and a sunburst on the other side.

    • 3

Check the price. A good quality original should sell for no less than $175.

    • 4

Check for common signs of counterfeiting. Altered coins often have letters, numbers or symbols which look slightly different from others on the coin. For example, a number in the date may look newer than the others. Also look for scratches on the coin which may indicate tampering. A common sign of a counterfeit is the way a coin feels. Coins that feel oddly oily are often counterfeit, as oil is used in the casting process.

Check for the detail on a coin. Counterfeit coins often lack fine detail and have a plainer look than a real coin does.
