How to Store Pure Silver

Storing pure silver, such is found in many silver bullion coins, requires care but little attention. Silver is tarnished by the presence of Hydrogen sulfide. This compound is found in wool, latex, rubber bands and oils containing fossil fuels. Preventing your silver coins from coming into contact with this compound is particularly important due to the loss of value that results when they are cleaned.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash your hands thoroughly to prevent the oils in your hands from coming into contact with the silver. Avoid the use of scented lotions or other cosmetics until after you have safely encapsulated your silver into your archival-quality storage medium.

    • 2

Handle your silver as little as possible. Handle coins only by their reeded edges, and do not touch their face. Press them gently into their holder and lock the surface, or slide the plastic screen into place. Place other forms of silver such as silver dinnerware, which can be polished, into their designated positions in the holder. Wrap silver bars in archival-quality sheets before placing them into their boxes.

    • 3

Store the silver inside its archival-quality storage box in a cool, dark place. Home safes make excellent storage cases for packaged silver and protect it from humidity. They also provide a secure place to keep the silver.
