Dealers
The best place to buy gold coins in person is from an authorized coin dealer. The U.S. mint website has a comprehensive list of official dealers who sell their gold bullion coins. Dealers are also an excellent place to purchase historical gold coins. Because the coins go through the hands of experienced dealers before they reach the customers, there is very little chance that you will be sold a counterfeit coin from a dealer.
Auctions
Auctions are another good place to purchase gold coins in person. You need to know a lot about the gold coins that are being sold in order to avoid overpaying for a coin, but it is possible to get very good deals at a coin auction. It is also important to evaluate the credibility of an auction before paying hundreds of dollars for gold coins that may not be real. Coin-specific auctions are generally very reliable, but it is sometimes difficult to find good deals at one of these auctions. If you are not absolutely sure about the credibility of a coin, do not bid on it.
Flea Markets
Occasionally, you will find a stall at a flea market selling gold coins. When these stalls are run by experienced coin dealers, they can be a good place to buy coins. In general, it is best to avoid flea markets unless you are very confident in your ability to evaluate gold coins.
Jewelers
Some jewelers sell gold coins in addition to jewelry. Because jewelers are well versed in spotting fake metals, they are often good places to buy authentic gold coins. Their coin selection is not always the best, however.
Pawn Shops
Pawn shops can be good places to buy gold coins in person, but the pawn shop must be reputable in order to be certain that you are getting a real coin. Again, before purchasing gold coins from a pawn shop, make sure you know enough about the coin or coins in question to be certain that they are legitimate.
